Beauty in the Details

Often waiting hours, or even days for the perfect shot, Claudio Gotsch, is a master at portraying the fauna of his native Engadine valley. Based in tiny La Punt, Switzerland (population 686, 2018), Gotsch walks the mountainous region he’s come to know intimately. Finding a suitable spot to set-up, he often hides in a blind or camouflaged tent, patiently waiting for animals to come to him.

Through his black and white photographs, Gotsch is able to capture the personality and intensity of each animal. What, on the surface, seems to be simple composition, reveals details that would otherwise be overlooked, allowing the viewer to take in the emotion of the subject’s eyes, each strand of hair, and expression of their face.

In, Schottländer, Highland cattle takes centre stage. This hardy breed is best known for their shaggy coat and long, wide horns. Photographing Highland cattle, specifically, is important for Gotsch as he’s a believer of keeping horns on domesticated cattle, as they are “empty” without them.

Design Tip: Utilize the timeless versatility of black and white imagery to add an understated focal point to a room. You’ll simultaneously add a natural element to the space, along with the personality of the bull in its tousled hair, intriguing expression, and curious eye. Rest assured, Shottländer is a beautiful piece that will never go out of style.

Sublime Architecture Turned Artistic Poetry

Renowned Scottish photographer, Soo Burnell, best known for her incredible Poolside series, returned to the stunning Molitor in Paris where she captured strong figures in an essence of silence at a pool of prominent Victorian architecture. Influenced by American filmmaker Wes Anderson, the photographer has a keen eye for detail as she transforms architectural wonders into spectacular compositions by highlighting striking geometry and ethereal colour schemes. Her works evoke a sense of scale, engaging viewers with a hypnotic and nostalgic reinterpretation of timeless spaces.

In her latest LUMAS release, Summer Swim at Molitor, cool blues and pastel tones stack as the rich yellow painted levels sit perfectly across the artwork, infusing just enough pop of colour and serene energy surrounding two subtle yet powerful female figures in swimsuits, on either side of the pool.

Not only does the Molitor have significant architecture but it also holds fascinating history that continues to influence fashion today. The site opened in 1929, with Olympic gold medallist, Johnny Weismuller taking the first dive there. Then in the summer of ‘46, Louis Réard revealed his great contribution to the western culture with the first ever bikini. These are many of the iconic moments that took place there, making it a place to be seen at.

Design Tip: Bring tranquility and nostalgia to your space by choosing to hang the artwork in neutral interiors. Let the work bring a balanced architectural majesty as its colours brighten a space in a sophisticated manner. Consider emphasizing the work by surrounding it with subtle objects, or choose to hang it over furniture such as a console table or a couple of boucle accent chairs.
