LUMAS Voices:

Art Consultant Favourites

As an art consultant, I constantly shift my perspective, not only to understand an artwork but to also see it through the unique eyes of art collectors, each with their own distinct interests. In this collection, I’ve compiled some of my favourite pieces in the portfolio that continue to inspire me.

ALAA’S HIGHLIGHTS

Faubourg-Montmartre

Iannis Pledel’s Inside Out beautifully blurs the boundaries between the exterior and interior worlds, creating a sense of both intimacy and curiosity. The way he captures Parisian street facades, while offering glimpses into the private spaces beyond, creates a unique, inviting atmosphere. I love how Pledel’s style, reminiscent of street photography, balances the surreal with the natural, blending realistic lighting and forms in a way that feels both grounded and dreamlike. These works offer a sense of intrigue, as one wonders if they are outside looking in or inside looking out.

I gravitate to Carol Muthiga-Oyekunle's work because it celebrates women as powerful, symbolic warriors full of strength and joy. Her bold, vivid portraits combine digital collage, photography, and graphic elements in such a unique way that it feels like each piece radiates energy and life. As someone who pursued fashion design studies and deeply values themes of culture, tradition, and Afrofuturism, I’m particularly captivated by how Carol combines elements so effortlessly, while blending the past, present, and future, creating art that holds up a mirror to a patriarchal society in a world of racial equality. Her work feels both personal and universal, with each piece echoing a deep connection to the strength and beauty of women across time and space.

Stray Hearts

Jamal Bassiouni's work resonates with my Egyptian heritage and my admiration of intricate pattern and texture play. I find Bassiouni’s fusion of ancient influences, like the linework, textures, and patterns inspired by culture, combined with modern expression, incredibly powerful. The artist uses painting to explore different aspects, from who we are, to our relationship with animals and nature, to the outside world. In this particular piece from his ‘Hounds’ series, Bassuouni investigates and celebrates our historic relationship with dogs.
