ARTIST IN FOCUS
MARGARETE SCHRÜFER
Margarete Schrüfer’s work is a poetic fusion of tradition and innovation, nature and technology.
The photographer transforms the ancient art of origami into a contemporary medium, creating mesmerizing
floral still lifes that exist in multiple dimensions—at once sculptural, photographic, and digital.
Her process is as intricate
as her art.
Each fold of her hand-crafted origami flowers is meticulously photographed, layer by layer, then digitally assembled into a seamless composition.
At first glance, her images resemble softly blurred flowers, but a closer look reveals an entirely different reality— capturing multiple moments in a single frame. Inspired by nature’s fundamental principle of folding—seen in blossoms, wings, even DNA— Schrüfer reinterprets organic structures through an innovative approach to an ancient artistic practice.
Like a painter replacing brushstrokes with folds, Margarete Schrüfer explores the interface of analog craftsmanship and digital innovation.
Influenced by her time in Japan and a background in sculpture and textile art, Schrüfer bridges centuries of artistic tradition, drawing from 17th- century Dutch still lifes and reinterpreting them for the digital age. The result: poetic, hypnotic, and entirely unique works that blur the line between art, technology, and illusion—inviting their viewers on a journey through time and culture.
